Advanced Germicidal Irradiation

UV light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) are an emerging technology and a UV source for pathogen inactivation. Research has proven that virus, including coronaviruses, can be quickly and efficiently deactivated using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) within seconds. Utilizing the most powerful, effective UV-C LED available, 100mW UV-C LED and high-speed fan technology, Southern Climate Solutions has created the most advanced, proactive, continuous clean air technology available today, and we do it safely in the presence of people, pets, plants and food.

Commercial Grade Dehumidification

It is a well-known fact that humidity effects the life cycle and transmission ability of viruses. Pathogens such as virus, mold and bacteria thrive on moisture. High indoor relative humidity promotes an unhealthy indoor environment. Indoor relative humidity should be maintained between 40%-60%, ideally 50%, to help minimize the ability for dangerous pathogens to thrive. Controlling indoor RH not only reduces transmission rates of virus, but also, prevents mold, creates energy savings and promotes superior indoor air quality.

The History of Ultra-Violet Light and Disinfection

UV lights were introduced in the early 1900’s and their disinfection properties have been understood for decades. UV-C LEDs were invented in 2003; however, they were so hot the only practical applications were in water treatment. Until 2012, UVC-LEDs were only ~8% efficient. Then, in 2016, UV-C LEDs with peak germicidal effectiveness of 260-280nm were invented. Two years later, in 2018, a break-through occurred with the launch of a 100mW UV-C LED. The most powerful, effective disinfection light available, 100mW UV-C LED is the ultra-violet light Southern Climate Solutions currently utilizes in our line-up of Clean Air Products. To our knowledge, Southern Climate Solutions is the only company utilizing this technology for air disinfection applications that is tested safe for use occupied spaces.

Optimal UV Disinfection

For effective destruction of airborne pathogens UVC light with 260-280nm of power must be employed. In-room air movement and indoor climate control regarding indoor relative humidity are also contributing factors in controlling transmission of virus. While many products are available, many are utilizing ineffective UV lights or passive methods that wait for pathogens to come into range of the light. Typical in-duct solutions are not effective. A recent report from the Illuminating Engineering Society mentioned a major flaw in using germicidal UV HVAC fixtures being that while the products disinfect air, they do little to stop person-to-person transmission. For effective interruption of transmission, air disinfection has to occur in the same room where transmission is occurring. Simply put, it does little to prevent virus transmission in-room where both an infectious source and other susceptible persons share the air. In addition, for UV light to be effective at all, the HVAC system fans must be engaged. Thus, there is no benefit of UV Light in-duct when the heat or air is not running.
